You can read everything on this site without giving us any personal information. You only provide information if you choose to:
- Contact us — if you send a message through our contact page or by email, we receive your name, your email address, and whatever you write to us.
- Subscribe to email updates — if you sign up for our email list, we collect your email address and, optionally, your first name. We use it only to send the updates you asked for. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.
- Leave a comment — if commenting is enabled on an article, we receive the name, email address and comment you submit, along with your IP address and browser user agent, which WordPress records as a spam-prevention measure.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, we and our service providers automatically receive certain technical information when you visit:
- Your IP address and approximate location derived from it (typically country or region, not a street address)
- Your browser type, operating system and device type
- The pages you view, the time and date of your visit, and how long you stay
- The website or search engine that referred you to us
We use this to understand which articles are useful, to detect and prevent abuse, and to keep the site working.

- Google Fonts (Google LLC) — web fonts, which requires your browser to request files from Google’s servers and therefore transmits your IP address.

- Amazon Associates (Amazon.com, Inc.) — affiliate programme.
- Gravatar (Automattic Inc.) — comment avatars, which involves sending a hashed version of a commenter’s email address. See Automattic’s Privacy Policy.
- Our web host — server logs, required to operate and secure the site.
How long we keep information
- Analytics data — retained in aggregated form according to our analytics retention setting, and not used to identify you personally.
- Email subscriptions — kept until you unsubscribe, after which your address is removed from active lists.
- Contact messages — kept as long as needed to answer you and to keep a record of the correspondence.
- Comments — kept indefinitely so conversations remain readable, unless you ask us to remove yours.
- Server logs — kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct information that is inaccurate
- Ask us to delete your information
- Object to, or restrict, certain processing
- Withdraw consent you previously gave
- Receive a copy of your information in a portable format
- Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information as those terms are defined under California law — we do not sell personal information, and you can opt out of personalised advertising using the links above
To exercise any of these rights, contact us through our contact page. We will not discriminate against you for making a request. If you are in the EEA or UK and are unhappy with our response, you may complain to your local data protection supervisory authority.
Legal bases for processing
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on: your consent for non-essential cookies and email marketing; our legitimate interests in operating, securing and improving the site; and compliance with legal obligations where applicable.
International transfers
Our service providers, including Google, Cloudflare, Automattic and Amazon, are based in or transfer data to the United States and other countries. Where personal data is transferred out of the EEA or UK, those providers rely on transfer mechanisms such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or an applicable adequacy decision.
Children’s privacy
This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and we do not direct any advertising to children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and we take reasonable technical measures to protect the information we hold. No method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Do Not Track
Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. There is no agreed industry standard for responding to it, so we do not currently alter our behaviour in response. You can use the cookie and advertising controls described above instead.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site, our service providers, or the law change. When we do, we will revise the “last updated” date at the top. Significant changes will be noted on this page.
